Contact the race secretary for trainer recommendations, and information about purse structure and types of stakes races or series raced at that track.
Breeders
Most every state has a group which works on behalf of breeders, which can offer advice about such things as yearling or mixed auction sales located in that state, or information regarding how to invest, even on a limited basis, in breeding a yearling or owning a broodmare.
State Regulators
The racing commission in each state will be able to answer questions about licensing requirements for owners, and the rules of racing in force in that state.
Administering State-Bred Stakes
Each state offers incentives, either in the form of purses or breeders or owners awards, to horses racing in that state as a means of encouraging a strong breeding program. When you consider buying a horse you should contact this organization to see if your horse qualifies to win such bonuses.

The Hoosier State is a relatively recent addition to the list of states offering commercial harness racing, having licensed the first meet, at Hoosier Park, little more than a decade ago. But, the state has long enjoyed a history of racing at county fair meets, and in August features racing at the Indiana State Fair in Indianapolis. Countless top horsemen have been developed in Indiana, and -- arguably -- the most famous harness horse of all time, Dan Patch, was foaled in the state.

Some of the sport’s top stallions make their homes at farms across the state, where racing and breeding are the third biggest contributors to the state’s agricultural industry. In addition, the Hambletonian, the sport’s richest and most important trotting races, is contested each August a the Meadowlands.

New York has more commercial racetracks than any other state—testament to the popularity of the sport in the Empire State. New York’s Goshen Historic Track, on the National Register of Historic Places, and the adjacent Harness Racing Museum and Hall of Fame, also celebrate the Standardbred sport. Cooperation between the tracks and the New York State Lottery, which operates video lottery terminals at the tracks, has brought a welcome infusion of purses—and investment in the sport.

Racing in the Keystone State is certainly on the upswing: Legalized slot machine gaming has caused the building of two new racetracks, and the complete reconstruction of the other two. Hanover Shoe Farms, which every year since 1947 has led the sport’s list of leading breeders, is also headquartered in the state.

Colonial Downs, which has a unique one-turn mile racing surface, has become a haven for some of the sport’s fastest trotters and pacers—all intent on lowering their speed records.
