Owner Resources

Your first step in finding a trainer can be contacting the racing resources in the area where you want to race. Click on a state below and look for the association listed as “Representing Horsemen.” They will put you in touch with one or more trainers looking to take on new owners, and will also be happy to tell you more about what that organization does to represent owners.

RESOURCES INCLUDE:

Racetracks
Contact the race secretary for trainer recommendations, and information about purse structure and types of stakes races or series raced at that track.

Breeders
Most every state has a group which works on behalf of breeders, which can offer advice about such things as yearling or mixed auction sales located in that state, or information regarding how to invest, even on a limited basis, in breeding a yearling or owning a broodmare.

State Regulators
The racing commission in each state will be able to answer questions about licensing requirements for owners, and the rules of racing in force in that state.

Administering State-Bred Stakes
Each state offers incentives, either in the form of purses or breeders or owners awards, to horses racing in that state as a means of encouraging a strong breeding program. When you consider buying a horse you should contact this organization to see if your horse qualifies to win such bonuses.
